The range, and how we got there: what dealers ask for the same car, what a yard typically pays for one, and what the condition takes off, line by line.

Negotiate the changeover, not the trade-in figure
Consumer NZ and the AA both warn that a generous trade-in allowance can be paid for with a higher price on the car you buy. The number to compare between yards is what it costs you to change cars.
Ask whether they'll sell it themselves
Consumer NZ and the AA say a yard that will sell your car on its own lot pays more than one that will send it to auction or a wholesaler. It's fine to ask which they plan to do.
Trading in doesn't reduce the GST
In New Zealand, GST is charged on the full price of the car you buy, not on the difference after your trade-in.
Common questions
Is it free?
Yes. There's no account or password, and we don't pass your details to dealers.
Is the estimate an offer?
No. It's an estimate of what a yard might offer, worked out from what dealers are asking for the same model, year and kilometres. What a yard actually offers depends on the car on the day.
Why is a trade-in so much less than dealers are asking?
The gap between what a yard pays and what it asks is closer to a fixed dollar amount than a percentage: a few thousand dollars on a mainstream car. So on a cheaper car it's a much bigger share of the price, and a yard may decline a very cheap car as a trade-in altogether.
Would I get more selling privately?
Usually about 5–15% more than a trade-in, but it takes longer and you deal with buyers yourself. Your estimate shows both.
Which cars does it cover?
482 models listed by New Zealand dealers. If we see too few of yours for sale to give an honest range, we say so rather than guess.
